Deuteronomy 28:67 (KJV 1900)
67 In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
An Impossible Situation
The verse above is a warning given to Israel of what would happen should they forsake the Lord once inside the Promised Land. God would place them in an impossible situation. In the morning they would wish for evening and in the evening they would wish for morning. As a consequence of future disobedience God Himself would place the Jews in an untenable position where they had only bad options. The principle is that bad decisions eliminate options until you arrive at a place where all that remains are undesirable choices.
This is an accurate description of the Evangelicals as we face the presidential election of 2016. We are confronted with an impossible situation where we cannot easily justify a candidate for the highest office in the land.
Government is not a Spiritual Agency
Like the Israelites of the Old Testament, this situation is of our own creation. We have relied upon politics to do that which only God can do through the church. The government is not authorized to produce spiritual outcomes, this is the domain of the church. Evangelicals have trusted in government to achieve spiritual ends rather than relying upon evangelism and discipleship to effect complementary changes in the culture.
Further, we have used “Christian” arguments to justify our wicked desires to maintain structural injustices in America and between America and it foreign neighbors. The lust of the Evangelical conservatives to justify the perpetuation of social inequalities and to acquire the markets and natural resources of weaker nations is exploited by politicians who, in the past [but no longer] provided “moral” cover to Christians by opposition to abortion and homosexuality. Among the politically liberal Evangelicals, the desire to achieve and preserve personal freedoms endangered by the conservatives has led to the justification of many evils that the bible condemns. The liberals’ disregard for the standards of scripture is demonstrated by the gradual slide of their churches into false doctrine and immorality.
Repentance or Judgment
Israel did not repent and they were defeated militarily and taken into captivity by their enemies. The very system that the Evangelicals trust in the place of God is planning to tax their churches, to gag and imprison their preachers for proclaiming the truth. The solution to the Impossible Situation is repentance towards God. Our pastors and churches must admit that our priorities have changed and our spiritual discipline lost. Pastors have valued membership growth and job security over God’s priority of love for Him as expressed by a commitment to the scriptures and their teaching. They must acknowledge and preach that society is influenced and changed by the penetration of the gospel and not by the power of government alone.
