A Richer Walk

Genesis 10:6 (KJV 1900) And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.

This passage describes a very simple but very potent fact. This passage describes a family. This family functioned in the same that all families have functioned before or since. It is subject to the same laws of genetics that all families must obey. Relationally, the brothers and father had the normal dealings that one would expect of family members. The nieces’ nephews, aunts, uncles and grandchildren would also possess normal relationships expected of close relatives. Over time the multiplication of these descendants would result in nations possessing the cultural capital and physical characteristics possessed by their antecedents.

The implications of the above are as follows:

1. Over the past few hundred years, in both the United States as well as in Europe the offspring of a black parent is considered black*. If Ham was black and Cush was black, then Phut, Mizraim and Canaan were black. If Ham was white, then the only way that Cush could have been black (which he was) is if his mother was black, but then the same argument holds, the other children would have been black as well. Furthermore, if Ham was white then the ridiculous “curse of Ham” could not have been upon blacks alone, but upon blacks and whites. Mizraim (Egypt) was a member of a black family. The family of Ham was a black family, like any other black family before or since.

2. The brothers, the sons of Ham, had relations with one another that proceeded through time as the individuals became nations. This is no different than the relations between the various nations which descended from Abraham which continue in both peace and conflict to this very day. The sons of Ham continued in relationship with one another in both peaceful and violent phases throughout history. The alliance of these black nations along with their mixed race cousins (e.g. the Lydians) is found throughout the biblical record. Ezekiel 30.5-6, 8 Nahum 3.9 Isaiah 20.3-5 Jeremiah 46.8-9, 25
