The Land of Israel and the Jews: Part 3

.

Mosaic Covenant Broken by Israel

The Jews were evicted from the Land of Israel because of chronic disobedience to the Law of Moses [ Dt 29.22-28; Jer 11.1-10; Heb 8.7-13]. This means that most of the nation no longer believed in God or the Old Testament and therefore failed to uphold their obligations under the Mosaic Law. The fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 AD. at the hands of Titus was the final fulfillment of God’s promised ejection from the land for breaking the Mosaic Covenant [Jer 26.17-18; Matthew 24.1-2; Luke 19.41-44; Josephus, Flavius: Wars of the Jews Book 6].

The Mosaic Covenant

There was a  theological and legal justification for the removal of the Jews from the land of Israel. The descendants of Jacob, who was renamed Israel, were designated heirs of the Covenants [Abrahamic and Mosaic] on the basis that they were believers in the one true God.

Exodus 20:1–3 (KJV 1900)
And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  [Isaiah 44.8; 46.9]

Once free of Egyptian slavery, the Law of Moses established the Moral, Civil and Spiritual codes of the new nation. The Mosaic Covenant, quoted above, was the conditional covenant that established Israel as a national entity under God and enabled the use of the land[1] only as long as the Jews maintained their obedience to the requirements of the Law.

Deuteronomy 29:24–28 (KJV 1900)
24 Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? 25 Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: 26 For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them: 27 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book: 28 And the Lord rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.

The first requirement of the Mosaic Law was that the Israelites were individually believers in the God of the Covenant [“no other gods before me”]. In other words, faith in the Abrahamic Covenant was the first requirement of the Mosaic Covenant.

Eternal life as a gift to all who believed in the Abrahamic Covenant was explained in the Spiritual Code of the Mosaic Law. The Temple, Priesthood, system of Sacrifice and Liturgical Calendar provided in the Law of Moses explained the requirements for right relations between man and God. The Mosaic Law could not save, but it pointed the way to what did save, that is, the coming Sacrifice, the Messiah.

The final act of disobedience under the Law was the rejection of the promised Seed of David, Jesus, the fulfillment of every Levitical sacrifice.

Matthew 27:22–25 (KJV 1900)
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

The destruction of Jerusalem and the Jewish temple in AD. 70 resulted in the temporary setting aside of Israel until the “fulness of the Gentiles,” that is, until the mystery of the Church is fulfilled [Eph 3.6; Col 1.26-27; Rom 11.25].

The Re-establishment of the Nation of Israel

True Israel’s permanent reinstatement to the land for the purpose of immediate blessing will be entirely the work of Jesus Christ, its true Messiah. This worldwide regathering of the redeemed sons of Jacob will be the remnant left after catastrophe inflicted upon Israel and the world during the “Day of the Lord” [Jer 30.1-10; Zech 14.1-9; Rev 6-16]. This remnant, or “true Israel” [Rom 9.6] will be gathered from the entire world [Dt 30.1-6; Isaiah 11.11-12; 29.12-14] and will experience national repentance. This repentance will be the sovereign work of God [Jer 30.1-3].

The Antichrist and the “Third Temple”[2]

If the vast majority of Jews[i] in modern Israel do not believe that Jesus Christ is their Messiah, for whom are they waiting? The Bible teaches that there is a coming world leader who will take his place as the ruler of Israel and very soon thereafter, of the world itself.

2 Thessalonians 2:1–4 (KJV 1900)
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

This event is referred to in Scripture as the Abomination of Desolation [Dan 9:27; 12.9-11]. This individual, the Antichrist [1 Jn 2.18], will not sit in a Christian church, or a Muslim mosque, or a Hindu temple. He will sit in a Jewish temple, which will be rebuilt. He specifically attempts to deceive Israel and to a large degree, he will succeed.

2 Thessalonians 2:8–12 (KJV 1900)
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The return of Jesus Christ to the earth to establish the true kingdom of Israel and inaugurate worldwide righteousness will follow the brief reign of the one who will represent himself as the Messiah of Israel, the Antichrist.

The New Covenant

Romans 11:25–27 (KJV 1900)
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

As we have established, the Kingdom promised to Abraham is an eternal kingdom that can only be inherited by those possessing eternal life. The majority of the inheritors of that kingdom will receive it through resurrection. Every other inhabitant of the final Kingdom of Israel will be redeemed [born again] immediately before or at the return of Christ. This provision of the Abrahamic Promise is called the New Covenant.

Jeremiah 31:31–33 (KJV 1900)
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant
With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the handTo bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my covenant they brake, Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: 3 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord,I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people.

God himself [Jesus Christ] will also gather the remnant of believing Israel from the lands where they have been scattered for many centuries.

Isaiah 11:11–12 (KJV 1900)
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, That the Lord shall set his hand again the second time To recover the remnant of his people, Which shall be left, from Assyria, And from Egypt [the Delta rw], and from Pathros [Northern Ethiopia/Southern Egypt], And from Cush [Ethiopian Empire], and from Elam [Southern Persia], and from Shinar [Babylonia],  And from Hamath [Syria], and from the islands of the sea. 12 And he shall set up an ensign [Jesus Christ] for the nations, And shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.

Neither of these prophecies have yet occurred. Isaiah 11 did not happen in 1948. What is being described there is a second Exodus, but one that occurs from across the “four corners of the earth,” a regathering of believers who will worship Jesus Christ. It is yet future.

Conclusion:

What is Happening Today?

What is happening today in the modern state of Israel?

  1. There is widespread violence against an indigenous ethnic group, the Palestinians, based not upon their religion, because the Jews themselves are largely secular, but because of their race and the desire for the land upon which they live.[ii]
  2. There is a plan to evacuate sovereign nations that surround Israel, apparently by the same methods, that is already in progress.[iii]
  3. There is a plan to eventually construct a Jewish temple[iv] that God has not authorized, since every genuine Jewish temple in Scripture [the Tabernacle and two Temples] was inhabited by God Himself. Why would God inhabit the Temple of a people who have not acknowledged their own Messiah/God?
  4. There is the anticipation of a Jewish Messiah who will not be Jesus and who according to the Bible, will introduce the world to the universal worship of Lucifer [2 Thes 2; Rev 13].
  5. There is an anticipated Golden Age of Israel: without repentance towards God, without a true Messiah or a true Temple.

Something like this happened long ago in Israel’s history.

Moses sent twelve spies to reconnoiter the land of Canaan to determine what the people would encounter in their entry to the land [Num 13]. The spies returned with bad news. Ten of the twelve proclaimed that the situation was hopeless, there were giants in the land that the Jews had no hope of overcoming.

Two spies, Joshua and Caleb disputed this assessment, saying that God himself would grant Israel the victory, as he had demonstrated throughout their Exodus from Egypt. However, the ten spies prevailed upon the people, who cried in despair and sought to assassinate Moses.

God stepped in an pronounced a severe judgment upon the rebellious Jews [Num 14:26–33]. Forty years of wilderness wandering until the entire generation who murmured against Moses and doubted God were dead, save Caleb  and Joshua.

Upon hearing this severe judgment from the Lord, the people changed their minds and set up a hasty offensive in belated obedience. Moses warned the Jews that their efforts would fail, as the Lord was not with them. Still hard-hearted and disobedient, the attack upon the Canaanites proceeded [Numbers 14:41–45]. The result was utter defeat at the hands of Amalek and the Canaanites [Numbers 14.43].

The people of the modern state of Israel have forgotten the reason that the Jews were evicted from the land of Israel in the first place. They not only are unwilling to acknowledge their defection from God, but they are also enthusiastically slaughtering the people of the land [the Palestinians] and other nation states that might interfere in their plans. They continue to reject their true Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.

What Can Christians Do?

Professing Christians in America should know better. They loudly proclaim themselves to be Bible believing but will not provide the truth to their Jewish allies. God will hold these Christians responsible for the following:

  1. Failing to evangelize the modern Jews, thereby demonstrating “Christian” contempt for the Gospel and the commands of the Word of God

Romans 1:16 (KJV 1900) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The Bible says to ‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee’ [Ps 122.6]. There can be neither peace nor lasting prosperity while living in opposition to Christ. What is the outcome of the new birth but peace with God [Rom 5.1] resulting in the peace of God [Php 4.7]?
  2. Failing to repudiate racism among professing Christians as unrighteousness and the failure of sanctification. American Evangelicalism has historically practiced and justified racism and white supremacy both here and abroad, in effect making it appear that God Himself is the author of injustice and unrighteousness.[v]

1 John 3:10 (KJV 1900)10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Those having a spiritual commitment to God and Israel would not financially support and theologically justify apartheid but would stand up for righteousness and justice in Palestine and everywhere [Isaiah 1.17; Jeremiah 22.3].
  3. Failing to reject and correct the faulty interpretation of Genesis 12.3. Stop teaching generations of American Christians that the failure to support unrighteousness and injustice in Israel is disobedience against God. Genesis 12.3 is grossly misused and turned into an instrument of oppression.

Genesis 12:3 (KJV 1900) 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Jesus summarized the entire Old Testament revelation in the Book of Matthew:

Matthew 22:36–40 (KJV 1900)36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The error of many Christians is placing the second commandment before the first. To pursue an earthly, political world order, American Christianity has placed the interests of man before commitment to God. We are willing to corrupt the meaning of the Scriptures for the benefit of a foreign ethnocracy [modern Israel] just as we have historically sustained an American ethnic supremacy on scriptural grounds.

The version of Christianity that has justified, by theology, a system of intergenerational, institutionalized bigotry in America has been exported around the world, infesting nations with the demon that has disabled their moral reflex and inoculated them against the true gospel. If God is righteous, and He is, our nation shall not escape responsibility.

[2] When this temple is built, it will be in direct opposition to God. It will have no covenantal basis, since the Mosaic Covenant is abrogated and the Abrahamic Covenant rejected through unbelief. It will be man by his own efforts creating his own conditions for fellowship with God.
